The short history of how the FEBC began
After reading two days worth of conversations, you may wonder if Dax and I ever worked. I hope you enjoy them as we bounced emails back and forth like a BB ricocheting in a metal room ... Ahhh, the delights of being ADHD.

I admire you and Rossy for doing the family thing and still managing to do your hobbies and do ‘em well. I was thinking about starting a renegade league, too -- was considering perhaps a league like Cas' football league, in which each owner gets a team and cannot make trades. Most people wouldn’t go for it, but hey, I'll sign up if you do start a Jedi League, so keep me informed.

I've got lots of the sp seasons. '58, '61, '78-88. We could play a season using that. Games only take about 1/2 hour to play there. (of course, if you add that into all the other things I've got going ...)
If you ever get around to downloading ICQ at home, we could play our series that way. We do have one coming up on the horizon ...
Here's the link for the Sports Gamer's Digest.
http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Stadium/2125
All you have to do is send an email asking to sign you up. It's free and comes out every monday. all sports gaming news. Sometimes there's lots of cool things, other times, it's just boring'. Most of the people who are into it are either strat-heads or former Avalon Hill fanatics. LOTS of gaming ideas and a great way to find some new ownerships for the LPBL or anything else we can cunningly (whew, that word was risqué) devise.

What do you have in mind for SP? The only season I have here (the rest of ‘em are in storage back home in NM) is 1980 ( I do have the 1981 A's here, but that's it). I'm curious but I also realize that your time is much more limited than mine.
I’ll try to remember to download it at home (hint -- KEEP BUGGING ME. OVER AND OVER. IT IS THE ONLY WAY I LEARN.) I’d like to try playing that way ... can you do the on-screen dice thing that Cas and others have talked about, or do we just roll ‘em and let each other know what numbers come up?
I signed up for the Digest. Sounds cool -- now I'm itching to get some Jedi going ... the only question is: what form will it take? so many options ...

I don't know ... I always talk like this ... as soon as someone says something about playing a sports game, my mind immediately says, "LEAGUE!"
Only the '80 season, eh? What other seasons do you have back in NM? At your folks house? If so, has mom spring cleaned and you're not aware of it?
Oh, I WILL keep bugging you about ICQ. They don't have a dice roller, so we would have to type in the dice roll. Notch and I played our series that way ... it was pretty cool. I like PBEM, but the chat room gaming is a step up in play ... it's ALMOST like playing face to face. the only down side is that you don't get to see the disappointment in their eyes when you pummel their ace ...
I'm looking forward to some jedi action myself. We'll start with some basic options ... NO DH.

Yep, only the 80s season right now. Yep, the others are at my folks house (mostly 1978-88). You not down with 1980? talk to me -- what is going on in that brain of yours?
Alright, alright! I will ICQ before our series. But you get to read the stream of curses that flicker across your screen ...

I think turf is ok ... but under certain restrictions. How about this ...
Turf owners are not allowed to draft ANY pitcher that has an ERA lower than 4.75 or any hitters that bat over .260 OR hit more than 10 dingers in a season.
That solves that. Then they can't come back and say that we're being prejudiced. Just selective, that's all.
'80 was ok. Wasn't that phillie and kc in the series? My fav season was '78. I tried getting my hands on '77, but it fell through when the guy wanted too much money.
Did you ever get the 75/77 set that DL put out? I've got that along with the '69 season. come to think about it, I also have the 82 set that they put out. I've got every set they've put out. Wow, I'm starting to feel like a junkie. Getting the tremors until I get home and throw the dice.
"stream of curse words flicker across ..."
No biggie. My dad was in the navy. Although those navy boys may be light in their loafers, they can string 'em with the best.
And, you forget that I've already played notch on my square headed girlfriend.
No dh, no turf, I like a bidding draft. Honestly, I like the whole way DL has laid out their rules. What say thee?

On the Jedi League, how about we start finding others to join in? Maybe make a posting on the DL Newsletter? Put something in for the Sports Gamer's Digest? And add some postings in some fantasy baseball news groups. Wanna set some kind of minimum in amount of players? Like it won't fly until we have 8 or 10? How did y'all do this last year? Did you start in the fall? Did you only get names through DL? We can use the Strat schedule maker for scheduling.

That all sounds good. I started by putting a notice in the DL Newsletter -- notch says he had a bunch of people write him when he put a notice in the DL newsletter, so I think that would be a good start, along with the other postings (sports gamer's, fantasy baseball, etc.). I say a minimum of 8 is a good start. It all started in november, I think. If we get rolling i think we could get something set up and if it carries into next Feb. then so be it.

Yeah, the name is no big deal.
I'm with you. My concern is also offending someone. The most likely scenario I could see is someone talking trash about one league to the other league and those uninvited folks getting pissed, hurt, etc. So we should think about this more -- maybe see who we can dig up through other means and see where we are, and fill in if needed with the cream of the LPBL crop.
We could tag-team it, but I am entirely comfortable letting you run the show. The dynasty rules are pretty much laid out and you are better than me at cracking down on the goldbrickers. I could be your consultant on any issues, but your power would supersede mine. How's that sound?
I am intrigued by the bidding system but how would that work online? I think we could get a kick-ass thing going ... This could be really cool. And you could design the web page.

I think you're right, we should see if we can muster up new ownership and use the "cream of the crop" from the LPBL as last resorts. Would save anyone from hard feelings and also prevent trash talk between leagues.
As much as notch hates AOL instant messenger, I still think it would be the best to use it for the ease of setting up chat rooms. It's simple, easy (easier than ICQ), and EVERYONE can use it regardless of your computer formats. That should help simplify the problems notch has run into in regards to getting everyone on ICQ.
Then all we would need to do is set up a time and date for the chat/bidding to begin. Following the DL rules will make that a pretty simple process. Everyone is in the room and will be able to bid.
And, yeah, I'll do the web for the new league. Name suggestions?
I don't mind running it, and I will always lean on you, my brother in the ADDness, for advice, suggestions, opinions and such. I enjoyed running the other league that I started, just couldn't find enough local peeps to keep the show going or growing.
I'll get an email off to DL as soon as we come up with a league name. Then follow up with an email to the Sports Digest and various news groups.

You are confirmed number 4. I put the news out on Thursday, so it's only been about 4 1/2 days. We have 4 others that have expressed an interest, but have yet to commit. There is another announcement coming out in today (or tomorrow's) sports gamers digest. My goal is to have 8-10 owners in place for bidding to begin around the first of August. This will be a fall league this year and next year will be a regular league beginning at the beginning of baseball season.
You can choose any name you want. Real or fictional, city or state, whatever you want. Have you chosen which REAL LIFE team you want to put into the player pool? My guess is you'll go with the Phillies. My choice is the Yankees and I know that dax riner (one of the other confirmed) will want the A's.
I would think we'd be up to the 8-10 owners in about another week or so. But we'll keep talking and working through any questions you or anyone else may have. I will start posting emails to all confirmed to keep everyone in the loop.
Lastly, I have begun working on the web site for the league and hope to have it up and operational by the time the league begins play.

I've downloaded aol instant messenger, and use screen name Gbags1. I guess this means I'd like to take up a franchise. I won't have problems keeping up the games, if I'm going to do it I take it seriously.
The timing of the auction will be important. As soon as you can fix a date I'd like to know. One of the next two weekends is to be spent visiting relatives - and at this stage I still have some flexibility as to which one. I can stay up late one week night, preferably Wed,Thur.
I guess the player pool will consist of a number of real rosters, is this the case or is there to be a wider pool. I'm a Tigers fan - but the way they've played the last few years I'd be glad if they weren't in it!
I'm now "champing at the bit" to put together an auction shopping list.

Good afternoon, Colonels. This will be a brief update.
First on my short agenda is the introduction of Ken Tedford to the great FEBC. Ken comes to us from a fellow DL in which he also partakes. Ken has chosen the Braves as his team for the pool. His team name is the New York Knights. He will play his home games in the famed Yankee Stadium. Please welcome him with all the Elvis fan fare you have all shown in our short existance.
The following are the six teams chosen, thus far, for the player pool: Yankees, Rangers, Indians, Braves, Phillies, BlueJays
The website continues to get updates daily. Please confirm that your information is accurate and note any corrections to me. Again, just to make sure everyone has it in their Favs, http://www.top-notch.net/rickster .
We are currently at 6 teams. We will continue to try to line up other ownership (we'll only go with an even amount of teams). There are announcements coming up in the next DL newsletter, SGD newsletter, and further announcements in various newsgroups and word of mouth. It is my intention and desire to have this league up to 8 confirmed Colonels by the end of the coming week.
In closing, I want to mention the league which Ken comes from, The wolverine League, is a southern Michigan face to face league. Over the last few months, I have been in correspondence with their commissioner, Garry Kaluzny. He is passing the word along regarding our PBEM league. That's how Ken heard, inquired, and joined us. We have also taken steps to prepare for a interleague championship beginning next season. We will complete this fall season on our own and then proceed into the spring as planned. After our season is over next year, our champion will face off against their champion. We'll have to plan on an internet version if the two champs are unable to meet face to face. But the challenge is there. I look forward to it and embrace our opportunity to become the top-notchiest PBEM league in the country.
Again, let me encourage you to talk amongst the other Colonels. The bidding will begin on August 7, at 8:00 A.M. CST. Everything seems to be a go. I'm psyched and I hope you are too!!

Let me take a moment to thank each and every one of you for your patience and commitment to the best PBEM league around. It is with great pleasure that I announce the latest two colonels to the group. Please welcome Jay (Memphis Mafia) and Brad (Vegas Rockers). I was up until 4:00 a.m. central time making phone calls, piecing together all the emails, rosters, trades made prior to the deadline, and assembling the player pool lists. This has been both exhausting and exhilarating.
I think it’s remarkable that we are entering our first season with eight teams and two divisions. This means that we will have division winners and then a 5 game championship series. Please note the changes that have been made to the web site which include a new schedule, updated Colonel information, and updates for the FEBC Code page.
