After much anticipation, the curtain was raised on the FEBC All Star Game in Kansas City. And although the pre-game festivities were in poor taste (Ted Williams' son throwing out the first pitch was uncalled for), the fans were pumped to see Da Bronx' Jamie Moyer take on Forbes Field's Woody Williams in the midsummer classic.
That anticipation quickly dissipated, as the OE offense pounded out 7 runs in the first 3 innings, en route to an 8-1 rout.
The dominance of the OE offense was matched only by their pitching, as the 9 OE pitchers allowed only 3 YE hits. And it was the OE Starting pitcher, Woody Williams, who took home the MVP honors, allowing 1 hit and 1 hit batsman in 3 scoreless innings of work, while striking out 2 (both Mafioso...Manny Ramirez and Jeff Kent)
Williams cruised in the 1st, except for plunking Carolina's Albert Pujols with a pitch. Then Jamie Moyer came to the mound, and things went downhill from there. Ichiro singled to lead off, and the Jailbirds' Jason Giambi doubled him in, to the delight of his hometown fans in Missouri. Up came Barry Bonds of Forbes Field, and Moyer decided to exact some revenge for the Pujols HBP, and he drilled Bonds with a fastball. Luckily, Bonds was wearing a full suit of armor to the plate, so he wasn't hurt. The Akita's Chipper Jones drew a 1-out walk to load the bases, and that brought up Soriano. He flied to right, but the cannon arm of Vlad Guerrero held all runners. Next, Hollywood's Alex Rodriguez had his chance with the sacks full, and he delivered a 2 run single...the first inning ended 3-0 Old Elvis.
Woody Williams retired the Young Elvis 1-2-3 in the 2nd, and allowed only a leadoff single by Paul LoDuca in the 3rd, then retired the next 3 YE All Stars in order.
Moyer rebounded from his 1st inning to get the Old Elvis to go 1-2-3 in the 2nd, and then he gave way to Boston's Frank Castillo. And let's just say his 1 inning of work didn't go smoothly. Bonds homered, Forbes Field's Posada singled, Chipper Jones homered, the Eagles Alfonso Soriano tripled. and after Castillo rebounded to whiff A-Rod and Satika's Eric Chavez, Hollywood's Luis Gonzalez delivered a pinch hit single, driving in Soriano. End of 3, 7-0 Old Elvis. Atlee Hammaker's name was mentioned in the peanut gallery.
The Old Elvis tacked on another run in the 4th when Jason Giambi welcomed Memphis' Roy Oswalt to the game with the OE's 3rd homer of the night, making the score 8-0.
The Young Elvis' 5th would provide their only highlight. Satika's Ismael Valdes came on to work the inning, and Memphis' Lance Berkman did what Giambi did the inning before...welcome a new pitcher with a solo homerun. That made the score 8-1 OE.
That would not only be the only YE highlight (unless you count Miguel Tejada's 1-out single in the 6th), but it would be the last highlight of the evening for either teams.
