Game 34  Reuter vs Halama
The Thespians lone All-Star took the mound in the series opening game vs the Pelicans.  His extreme wildness in the first four innings (6 BB’s, 1 HBP) cost him in the third.  Three consecutive singles by Derek Jeter, Jason Kendall, and Ichiro plated the first run, and Halama walked the next two to make it a 2-0 game.  Halama got Ken Griffey to hit into a double play which plated the third run to minimize the damage, and Halama shut down the Pelicans from there through the 8th.  Meanwhile, the Thespians scored single runs in the 4th, on Marquis Grissom’s solo HR, and the 8th, when two out wildness struck the Pelican bullpen, and the Thespians capitalized on a run scoring single by Karim Garcia.  In the top of the ninth, however, Joey Eischen gave up bombs to Henry Blanco and Pat Burrell, ending any hope of a ninth inning comeback.

Game 35  Schilling vs Baez
Dannys Baez made his first start of the season for the Thespians, and the Pelicans moved up Schilling to pitch this game.  Schilling wasn’t sharp, but Baez was worse.  Carlos Delgado gave Chico the lead with a solo homer in the bottom of the first, but Baez gave up 5 runs in the 2nd thanks to 3 walks, 2 hits, a WP and a botched FC, the key hit being Ichiro’s 2 out double.  Vance Wilson cut the lead to 5-3 with a 2-run shot in the bottom of the inning, but four more baserunners in the third got one back for the Pelicans.  Garcia homered in the 4th, as the Thespians went to their bullpen.  A tiring Mark Fyhrie gave up a run-scoring single to Ken Griffey for a 7-4 lead, but the Pelican bullpen got out of a jam in the 8th inning with the only run scoring on Cabrera’s double, and Kim pitched a rough, but scoreless, ninth to secure the 7-5 victory.  The injury bug snuck up on both teams, as Vance Wilson had to leave the game in the 3rd inning when a foul tip caught him funny, and Vina got run over by Ichiro allowing Cabrera’s double to fall.  Both players will be held out of tomorrow’s series finale, but should be available at the start of their next series.

Game 36  Vazquez vs Sabathia
C.C. Sabathia took the mound hoping to help the Thespians avoid a sweep at the hands of the Pelicans, and despite allowing 5 walks he did his job.  Although in trouble all afternoon, the only run Sabathia allowed was a solo homer to Robin Ventura in the 6th.  Javier Vazquez, the second Pelican pitcher moved up in two nights for the starting assignment (prompting Thespian manager Jake Taylor to shake his head in wonderment at the folly of moving up a team’s two best starters to face a last place team), was equal to Sabathia, also pitching out of trouble all day, and only allowing a solo homer to Karim Garcia in the 6th.  The key hit came in the 9th, when Lou Merloni, subbing for the injured Fernando Vina, got his third hit of the day to drive home Sean Casey.  Two Pelican runners had already been thrown out trying to score on Merloni’s previous hits, but this time Jose Cruz didn’t get the chance.  Despite three hits in their last seven batters, the Thespians couldn’t score again and the sweep was completed.  To make matters worse for Chico, Dave Roberts, acquired this year to give the Thespians a true leadoff hitter, pulled a hamstring on a hit and run play forcing him to be disabled.  He will be eligible to return in August on GD 50.
