The Brawlers, owning the most wins in the YE, came cross-town to
take on the team with the worst record in the YE, that being the Doughnuts.
This had ugly sweep written all over it...

Game 1 featured Danys Baez for Da Bronx, while Livan Hernandez got the start
for New York...and what a start it was. In the first inning, Mike Cameron
came up for Da Bronx with the bases loaded and 1 out, and he hit a 4 run
homer (I like to call them "grand slams") so it was 4-0 Bronx. And there
were still 26 outs left to be recorded.

But amazingly, Livan and reliever Tim Worrell got those 26 outs without
giving up another run. But could the Doughnuts catch up?

The comeback started in the first, when Rafael Palmiero hit a 2 run
homer (I like to call them "2 run homers") to make the score 4-2 Bronx.

Then in the 7th, another rally. Javy Lopez led off with a ground ball
that was booted by Rey Sanchez. Gonzalez struck out, and Livan bounced into a
force play...2 down. That brought up Ray Durham, and he hit a ball to the
wall that he stretched into a triple, scoring Hernandez. Up came Catalanotto
with the tying run 90 feet away with 2 down, and he......grounded to 2nd.
Rally over.

And as it turned out, that would be the last rally New York could
muster, as they would not get a runner on base in the last 2 innings.

If New York was gonna win a game, it was gonna be this one, since the
pitching matchup was Randy Johnson vs Kaz Ishii. But New York had not yet won
a game in which the Big Unit had started.

But for once, it was the opposition starter that didn't have it, not
the Doughnut starter.Ishii walked 5 Doughnuts in 4 innings, and 4 of those
walks came around to score. Ishii ended up giving up 6 runs in his 4 innings.

Meanwhile, Randy Johnson went the distance, giving up 3 hits, 1 run
(unearned), and faced just 3 batters above the minimum.

And if ya haven't figured it out by now, all that added up to a
Doughnut win..an 8-1 blowout no less! That put the red hot Doughnuts at a
sparkling 2-2 in their last 4.

New York sent Simontacchi to the mound, looking for the first
Doughnut series win of the year, and their first winning streak as well.
Hopes were high in New York...until the game started.

Da Bronx proceeded to pound Simontacchi to the tune of 8 runs in the
first 2 innings. The only positive in the game for New York was that it was
rained out after 5 innings. And since the game was shortened, this write-up
will be shortened as well...
